Front:
CO 54 stitches using longtail cast on. Always work the first and last two stitches in stockinette, for seam allowance. Work 2 repeats of fishtail lace. Work in stockinette until piece measures 12” from beginning.
Start cable pattern: work for 2 rows in a K4, P2 rib starting on a right side row. Work 2x2 right crossing cable every 4 rows 2 times.
Work in stockinette for 5 inches.
Straps: on right side row, K10, BO 34, K 10. Join new ball. Work straps in stockinette for 6 inches, BO. (for a non-rolling strap I crocheted around the edges, but you could work in seed or ribbing)
Back:
Work the same as the front except after the cabling, work for 7 inches, and straps for 4 inches.
Finishing:
Weave in ends. Seam up sides with right sides together. The End!

by small/medium what do you mean? what's your bust? 32? 34? 36? Please let me know and then I can fiddle with the math from there. :)
Another cute pattern. I'm a very experienced knitter, so your instructions are fine for me. I think my nieces would love this, great on its own, but also as a layering piece.
