I went home this past weekend & worked on a quick craft with my little sister inspired by this blog post! We used bristol board, pigma pens, and watercolors. (You can rotate your goal list depending on what needs to be done, just take off the sticky notes!) Mine was all just a quick freehand (I traced around a stack of post its for the squares.)

baby hats & more infinity

I've been making baby & preemie hats out of scraps of yarn from projects. Here are two that I made over the past week or so. (Once I have a lot of them I'll be donating them to the hospital.)

I'm also working on (yet another) infinity scarf. Right now I'm working on miles of plain stockinette in this raw sugar/cream colored alpaca (so soft!). This will be the inside, close to my neck. The outside is going to be knit in gold sparkle-flecked pink and sand colored yarn. (Not sure which stitch yet.)

I'm proud to show you my newest hat design! This slouchy-braid cable hat is knit from ultra-soft merino wool (handpainted!) and has evoked comments like "so comfy & smooshy! I could take a nap in it!" It's knit in the round with a simple cable pattern. (The pattern contains both charted & written instructions).

Circumference: 20”
Height: 8.5”
To fit an adult woman

Yarn
One skein Madelinetosh Merino- worsted weight. (210 yards a skein, you will have a (tiny!) bit left over).

Needles
US 6 and 10, 16” circulars
US 10 double pointed needles

Supplies
Stitch marker, yarn needle

Gauge
17 sts and 19 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch on larger needles.

The brim is worked in a twisted rib that keeps everything neat & pretty.

The decreases come together into a little star at the crown.

This picture shows one day of knitting. This hat is so quick! It's another pattern I'm working on. (I have a couple of finished objects, but no time to take some nice pictures!)

The yarn is incredible! And yes, it is a skein of Madtosh that I bought at Purl soho. (The color is so pretty, but I wish I had gotten a skein of "cove" too.)

In other news: it has been an unseasonably mild winter, hardly any snow! But the other night we had a light dusting of snow & these incredible pink skies.

wip wednesday: tea & honey hat

I'm adjusting to yet another new school and having a hard time finding time to knit & relax! But I escaped a little today after class for some tea and a little designing. This hat is turning out just how I wanted so far!

And a future wip... I bought this yarn at Vogue Knitting Live 2012 and I keep picking it up and dreaming about what I should do with it. It's really my perfect yarn ( the friends I went to VKL with all ooh-ed & ah-ed and said "Erin! That was made for you!") So I want to make something that I'll use a lot!

I had some Jacquard dyes & an afternoon to kill with a friend and came up with these:

Beautiful, right? (That pink is out-of-this-world bright & impossible to photograph.) I'm pretty excited to knit with these!

Also, I made these twig bangles with a friend over the weekend. We used this tutorial.

FO Friday: Fibonacci Scarf

I knit this on my way to Vogue Knitting Live 2012! It was pretty awesome. I did walk away with a beautiful skein of yarn, but it did set me back a couple of dollars... I took a lecture with the amazing Norah Gaughan & it was very inspiring. :)

This scarf was knit in the round on size 8 needles with a stripe sequence following Fibonacci's. (It's really an awesome thing, check it out if you've never heard of it.)

Then I kitchener-stitched the ends together to make a very-warm double sided circle scarf.

How To: Anthro Inspired Tree Jewelry Holder

What you need:
~a small, still green branch with lots of spots for necklaces & bracelets
~some little twigs for the nest (where you can keep rings!)
~gold wire
~gold spray paint
~hot glue
~shellac (optional)
~thread
~a bowl (I got this one from salvation army for a dollar)
~weights for inside the bowl like stones, rice, etc. (I used seaglass).

First, lay out something to protect the floor & spray paint your branch gold in a well ventilated area. After it's dry, you can spray it with shellac to protect the color.

Making the Nest:

This is the most time consuming part.

First, get one of your twigs and bend it in a circle like in the first picture. Use your hot glue to tack them into place and wrap thread around the join as shown. Glue the thread down.

Next, weave your wire around the twig as shown in the 2nd and 3rd pictures. (There's no precise science to this, just make a good surface for your nest.)

Finally, hot glue some of your extra twigs to the sides to make the nests more realistic. Then spray paint & shellac your finished nest.

Put it together!:

Glue your nest into a good little branch of your tree. (You can use more thread to secure it if you need to.)

To mount your tree, hot glue the base to the middle bottom of the bowl and hold it still until it dries. Then fill the bowl with your weights.

That's all! Enjoy!

FO: Polished Pullover

I am beyond excited about this sweater! I wrote about buying the yarn and working on the body, and now it's finally done!

I knit this up on size 3 & 5 U.S. needles. It's knit in the round from the bottom up and then the sleeves are knit in the round separately and sewn on.

I love how the sleeves turned out.

Lace and cables! The front and the back are worked identically.

I was lucky that I had my little sister around to take some pictures & this beautiful dress to wear with it!

I'm working on writing the pattern for other sizes & it'll be available soon!

I've seen a couple of really cute knitted twisty headbands around this season & decided to give it a shot.

The pattern is "twistin' the night away". I used size 15 U.S. needles and ultra soft baby alpaca yarn. (I've had it forever, but never knew what to do with it!)

I wrote about this painting way back when but haven't really had time to work on it until recently. And now it's done! It's not perfect, but I like it that way & pretty happy with how it turned out.

I also can now post pictures of christmas gifts like these flip top mittens I made for my mom, this butter-yellow color is so hard to photograph but it's very pretty in real life!

It's crunch time for Christmas knitting!
This hat was a commission, I used the last minute slouch pattern and I actually really like how it turned out. I'm not sure what this yarn is, some acrylic blend. But I might make one of these for myself after the new year. (I used size 6 and size 10 needles).

I've also been knitting my gossamer infinity scarves like crazy for gifts & commissions. (I also learned how to do this pretty new braid. :) )

how to: mason jar sewing kit

I've seen these all over pinterest but no real tutorial.

What you need:
~mason jar
~felt
~fabic
~polyfill or scraps of fabric for stuffing
~hot glue & needle and thread

Lay your lid on your fabric and cut a square about an inch larger than the lid.

Sew a loose running stitch throughout the edge of the square.

Pull on the thread to gather up the fabric into a bowl shape. Then stuff with your fabric scraps or polyfill. Sew through the top of the pincushion to secure it.

Glue the pincushion to the top of the lid.

Cut a circle the same size as the lid out of felt and glue it to the other side of the lid.

Screw on the top & fill with sewing trinkets! I'm going to add a couple of fat quarters to this as well for my little sister. :)

It's been a productive week for me! First up are these pretty & simple fingerless gloves. I knit these way back when I first started knitting, but now that I'm older and wiser I made a couple mods to the pattern. (ex. using smaller needles for the ribbing).

How To: Gossamer Infinity Scarf

A quick & easy how to for these gorgeous, sparkly infinity scarves.

What you need:
~Size 13 U.S. 29" circular needles
~Glittery, laceweight yarn (I used "Mohair Glitter"

1. CO anywhere from 100 to 150 stitches, join in the round. (Depending on what you like, you can leave some twists to create a mobius-like effect, or get all the twists out for a more traditional scarf.)
2. Work in Garter stitch (knit one round, purl one round) for an inch & a half to prevent curling.
3. Work in stockinette stich (knit every round) until your scarf is an inch and a half away from the width you want. (I do 6 to 8 inches)
3. Work Work in Garter stitch again for an inch & a half to prevent curling on this side.
4. BO loosely! I like to use the K2tog bind off (because it's fast!) or the Sewn Bind off (because it's stretchy & pretty).

That's all!

Wrap them in pretty tissue paper tied with a ribbon & they make great holiday gifts.

Happy thanksgiving to all of you in America!
I'm spending my holiday working on Christmas gifts. (I always wait until the last minute...)

First, I've been knitting these gossamer infinity scarves like crazy. I'll have a whole stock of them by the end of the year.

Another awesome gift: I've been making these "heartwarmers" that you can put in the microwave for a few seconds & put in your coat pockets to keep your hands warm.

Next up, a panda hat that I've knit a million times and written up a pattern for. But this one was for a 5-month-old. I got a picture of her in it later & it was beyond adorable.

Finally, a pair of flip-top mittens that were commissioned. They were loosely based off ofPurl Soho's pattern, but I modified it because 1. they were huge! and 2. I hate reverse stockinette.

So happy with the result of this! This really didn't take very long to knit. you can see and in-progress photo here. I used size 13 U.S. needles and this beautiful thin wool/mohair/glitter yarn. The glitter is really nice in person, but it's hard to capture in pictures.

It looks soo pretty with my fall coat too. (It's light as air when you pick it up, I can hardly tell that I'm wearing it.)

I'm still plugging away on my sweater pattern, but I'm running low on bandwidth & patience these days so I decided to start something beautiful that I could do with my eyes closed. Enter my newest project: this gossamer, glittery infinity scarf. (It's a mohair/wool/sparkly blend). Essentially it's just a huge tube knit on size 13 circular on really thin yarn. I think it's going to turn out really pretty.

If that wasn't enough glitter for you, I also did my little sister's hair for halloween. It's an inverted french braid with some glitter hairspray.

It's been quintessential fall here (minus the snow yesterday...) and I've been working on some odds and ends.

I'm making some progress on my sweater-body, but it's a little slower than I'm used to because it's pretty fine-gauge.

I've been really loving playing the piano lately. (I'm learning Clair de Lune by Debussy)

glitterheels:
Ingredients: ~cheap heels (these were $5 from charlotte russe)
~white glue & old paintbrush
~coordinating glitter
~newspaper for the mess

This was super easy: lay down the newspaper, use the old paintbrush to coat the part of the shoe you want to sparkle, gently siphon glitter over the glued-parts. (make sure you stay over the newspaper!)
Repeat on the other shoe, let dry, & wear! (you could also add a layer of sealant so the glitter doesn't escape).

I've mentioned before how I love anthropologie, and I'm not alone! Out of all the style/fashion/craft blogs I follow, it seems like everyone has professed their love to the
Great Anthropologie.
(I don't know how many times I've heard "If I was rich, I'd buy all my clothes at anthropologie.)

I was in NYC this weekend and stopped into the Rockefeller Center shop determined to find something reasonably priced.

I came out with this beautiful, full skirt! Check out this price tag!
Also, I paid $14 dollars for it, there was another sale going on!

So I'm slowly building myself an Anthropologie wardrobe piece by piece.

I'm slowly but surely teaching my little sister the very bare-bones of sewing. She's got a good handle on what the presser foot is ("it looks like a pair of elf shoes") and is working on learning how to cut straight lines. :)

This is a blanket we made together for her baby stuffed-animal bambi out of my scraps. (And now she knows what topstitching is!)

See all this yarn? So much that I couldn't hold it all at one time?

I bought it for $15!
No joke.

So I'm going through a kind of tough time trying to transfer colleges unsuccessfully. Meanwhile through all the stress I'm still trying to work hard, get good grades, etc. etc. But I had a little ray of sunshine last week when my friend & I visited a yarn store ("the biggest in the county") that was just down the road from my apartment!

Among other beautiful things (that you'll probably see knitted up eventually) the best deals I got were the two pictured above. 7 skeins of Karabella Breez (That's cashmere & silk!) for $5 total & 8 skeins of handspun 100% wool for $10! (On consignment)

So now I'm knitting up the cashmere/silk into a new sweater design. It's finer-weight than I've ever used for a sweater, so we'll see how it turns out!

I'm pretty happy about how it turned out!
It wasn't easy though, it took me forever to track down an extra skein of this yarn, find time to knit and record the pattern, and find buttons that looked good.

It's been too hot to knit! I have been working on a pair of socks during my lifeguard break.. but I have honestly felt more like reading. (I'm working my way through the Harry Potter series again after seeing the last movie.)

So, in the effort to make something that wouldn't be too warm, I made these earrings. They are exactly what they look like: feathers, wire, a wooden bead, and an earwire. Pretty though!

perfect drawstring bag

I'm going through a little rough patch in my life now and I've had the desire to make something decadent and perfect.

This drawstring bag is made out of sugarcane yarn (100% sugarcane vicose) and lined in silk.

The bottom is knit in garter stitch with simple decreases. It was a really quick & satisfying knit.

Just a quick post. I went to a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game this weekend (even though I'm a Yankees fan) and had nothing gold/yellow to wear. (This is for good reason, it looks terrible on me.) As I was leaving I found this gold ribbon & tied it into a bow and slid a bobbie pin behind it. It worked great.

It was wonderful weather for the game, great for good spirits and flowers.

My littlest sister shares a bit of my soul. She is always asking to do crafts with me so I have a bookmarks folder entitled "crafts for sister". This is one we did the other day using this tutorial for earrings.

She covered hers in mica powder, so it's all shiny. But you can't tell from the picture.

K2tog Bind Off Tutorial!

1. This is a great BO, it's stretchy & looks a lot like the long tail cast on. It's also really fast! (please excuse my chipped nailpolish!)

2. So you start out by just inserting your right needle just like you're going to knit two stitches together.

3. Wrap around...

4. ....

5. And pull through.

6. Here's the twist: put this stitch back on the left hand needle. Then insert your right hand needle to knit together that stitch with the one before it.

7. Nice right! Just repeat these steps until the end of your piece.

8. And this is how it looks, enjoy!

a little late again, what can I say? I'm busy!

I ran out of yarn for my plaited vest (literally like 10 more yards are needed.) so I needed to start something new until I have the money for a yarn order.

Enter Norah Gaughan. I just love all of her designs. It's one of those things where I will look through a book & only one pattern will stick out to me and when I look at who the designer is, it's always her.

So I started the Missing Piece Hobo bag out of a handspun that my highschool music teacher made for me. :)

I'm home for the summer! I'm excited to start working again and (hopefully) having some time to make things. I want to get back into sewing over the summer, it was hard not having a sewing machine at college!

This is what I'm working on now, the remake of my plaited vest. It's going well, but I'm starting to worry I'll run out of yarn!

This tank could not have fit me any better. And let me tell you, I did not do a gauge swatch. I’m waiting for lightning to strike me. (I just don’t like to swatch!).

the pattern is from Interweave Knits Spring 2011. (here).

The side view makes a little baby-bump type thing, but I just don’t care.

I knit this out of recycled cotton. The sweater that I unraveled it from cost me only one dollar! (I originally planned to knit something else out of it, but it was too thin: read about it here) I’m in love! The yarn made a super-air-light fabric that is just perfect for summer.

I had a little trouble starting off this pattern, I misread the directions (“at the same time”=ugh), but eventually it all worked out. If I were to change anything, I would have done a few more rows of garter stitch on the back because it is a little roll-y.

Success! :)

I've been stressed out like crazy for finals week & needed something to calm me down. Enter garter stitch on peachy pink cotton: cast on 20 stitches on pretty bamboo needles, knit until a square slipping the first stitch of every row for a neat edge, and cast off. I finished my beach socks! (in progress here) I absolutely love them. The pattern is Baudelaire by Cookie A and I used Cascade Heritage.

This was such a good knit. Since these were my first toe-up socks, I had a little trouble with the toe. But it was smooth-sailing from there. The second socks felt like it took a quarter of the knitting time the first one took.

This pattern has been in my queue forever. I haven't been able to find solid sock yarn near me until I moved away to college. (I love the cable up the side.)

I'm still working on my Baudelaire socks (they're almost done!) and I thought another picture of them would be boring. So here is my plan for my next project:

during my NYC yarn crawl I picked up this beautiful yarn & wound it today! It's Blue Sky Alpaca's Multi Cotton. 100% organically grown, amazingly soft, in the prettiest ever seafoam green colorway.

I'm planning on redoing my own pattern, Plaited. It's a really old pattern (made when I first started knitting) that was knit out of acrylic & has a few errors here and there. So I'm making my next project updating it. :)

NYC Yarncrawl!

I had the most wonderful say yesterday. New York was thrust into spring, and I was there to make the most of it. :)
First I went to Knitty City on 79th street (above) and was blown away. I think I might have touched every single skein of yarn.. everything is grouped together so prettily. There was a class going on in the back. (so funny to listen to beginning knitters now that I'm not one!) and I made friends with a lady knitting. :) They also had a cute puppy running around, always a plus!

I bought a skein of cobalt blue sock yarn and some circular needles. I had to contain myself from going overboard because I still had more places to visit. But I'll definitely be back!

It was so gorgeous, I decided to walk through Central Park instead of take the subway. (I had worn two jackets, didn't need either!)

stopped to knit & eat lunch in central park. Surrounded by saxophone playing, families taking carriage rides, and runners. :)
Had to laugh, while walking around I spotted a truck for a yarn store! Only to find out that it is a bus for the Flying Fingers yarn shop. :)

Next I got to String on East 65th. It was beautifully laid out with white-washed walls and pretty colors. But the atmosphere was stiff, I felt like my college-age pocketbook didn't belong there. So I took some photos & admired everything, but left empty handed.

I hopped on the subway & ended up in Rockefeller Plaza to visit Anthropologie! I ended up buying the most beautiful cream tank top with sand, sea, & sky colored fabrics and ribbons stitched to the neck. For twenty dollars! And I had a gift card. :)

I took the F train down to Soho and visited Purl Soho. :) I forgot to take a picture! But Purl Soho was lovely. I picked up a million skeins of yarn & sorted through them, admired skeins of cashmere, and dived into a sale pile! I eventually left with two skeins of worsted loosely spun cotton in seafoam & white, lilac sock yarn, and a variegated blue/grey wool. :)

Such a great day!

I've mentioned before how my wednesdays are brutal. How brutal you ask? Pictured above is a beach bag that is the result of just one class period of knitting.

The good news is: I'll be at the beach a week from now!

My bag is inspired by the Medano Beach pattern. But I didn't use the pattern because it seemed a little more fiddly than necessary and I didn't have time to print it out anyway.

Off to my next 4 hour class!

Awhile ago I made a few birdnest rings and since then I have seen them all over the internet. Recently I saw and entry on Tea Rose Home that featured adorable birdnest hairpins. So I whipped up this one. I used a much smaller gauge wire than normal, but only because that's just what I have on hand! I actually like how delicate it came out.

I'm pretty much smack dab in the middle of the spectrum as far as organization goes. I have a corner in both my real room & my dorm room designated for yarn. (A drawer in my dorm room, and show0hanger in my real room as well as a tupperware.)

The above picture is of some new yarn that I got today! On the left is sock yarn that I plan to (finally!) make Baudelaire out of! (this is my vacation knitting, heading to the beach in the middle of April!) On the right is "sugar rush" yarn, made from sugar cane! It's unbelievably soft.

In the middle is a little Vera Bradley purse that my mom gave to me for making the dean's list last semester. :) It matches my new yarn so well!

So today, this was the prompt:

Personally, I have absolutely perfected economical college-life knitting. I just can't afford enough yarn to make sweaters and other big things. That's where recycling fits in. The sweater above was knit from yarn that I unraveled from a salvation army find:

And it only cost me two dollars! Can't beat that! Even store bought sweaters cost more. :)

I've mentioned before that wednesdays are my worst days class-wise. But, today I got to my 4 hour chinese history class to discover that I got a 95 on the midterm I thought I failed!! Yes! And I also spent the whole class working on my gathered front tank from interweave knits. I had started it monday, but with the wrong needles (oops) so I ripped it & started it again.

So I wake up this morning to inches & inches of SNOW. Unreasonable. I couldn't believe it. And, unfortunately, I have this rule about the first day of spring. It's that I don't wear a coat anymore. (Because that coaxes the cold weather to stay!)
The good news is I have been working on this circle scarf...

I have been using up the scraps from my "en pointe" yarn

It's just a simple tube with an easy lace pattern & seed stitch. But I had hoped to not need it until next winter...

Finally finished! I've been working on this pattern on and off for what's seemed like forever. Ever since I saw Black Swan in theaters I've been dreaming of a pretty, soft, ballet wrap sweater. This is what I came up with.

It's knit out of recycled yarn. I can't remember the content anymore, but it's machine washable with some wool and angora content.

I love sweaters with a bit of a scoop back.
I wasn't sure if I should add ribbing or not but I'm glad I did. :)

en pointe is knit sideways from ribbon tie to ribbon tie. The sleeves and ribbing are knit separately. There's no seeming! Off to the test knitters for this one. :)

So wednesdays are pretty tough for me; I have two four hour (brutal) classes. But lo & behold I check my mail today between classes and find a package from home!
My mom is the greatest. :) She knows just what I like & need (gum, a gluten free treat, flavored green tea, facewash, knitting & art magazines!).

(I got a new lens! I'm still working on using it though, sorry for the blur.)
This is just a quick bulky headband knit out of lionbrand wool ease that I've had lying around for forever. My mom saw the photo of the bow headband on my blog so & asked for one, but I have had enough of knitting those bows! So I tried something else out. Hopefully she likes it.

I did the "right way" of doing short rows this time. (Wrap & Turn, check out Very Pink Knits on youtube if you're curious!) If left no holes, which is great. This project literally took me an hour or so, I finished it in between classes.

frenchbraid your own hair

A year or so ago I decided to learn to french braid my own hair and then ended up giving up on it because my arms were getting sore & it was just turning out bad.

I mastered it though! This video is less of a tutorial and more of a triumphant show off. :)

I had already pinned my bangs back with a bow clip, but you could start up high on your head and include your bangs if you wanted.

The Basics:

-start at the middle top of your head and take a 2" chunk. Split into three sections

-cross the left section over the middle, the right section over the middle, the left section over the middle.

-start the french part! add hair to the left section, cross over the middle section. Add hair to the right section, cross over the middle one.
(use one hand to hold all three sections using your fingers to keep them separate and the other hand to add/smooth out hair)

-repeat this until all hair is in the braid. cross the left section over the middle, the right section over the middle, the left section over the middle in the direction of the shoulder you want the braid to fall over until you reach an inch or so from the end of your hair.

- secure with a hairtie (the ones without the metal bits. Ouch) and loosen up the braid so it looks pretty. <3 The End!

wire crochet hairpin

Lots of internet & power problems going on here. Leaves time for making things, but makes it impossible to post them. This is just a quick project to give my hands a break from the sweater I am working on. It's made with 28 gauge wire and my hook doesn't have a size. (hmm.)

It was really simple, I essentially just crocheted one round of a circle and then used the tails to attach the pearl and bobbie pin.

shortrow headband

I have been seeing cute, bow headbands all over. From forever 21 to ravelry. So this is my version. I've never done short rows before (besides sock heels) and wanted to test them out.

It was great train knitting. Unfortunately, amtrack took my size 6 16" circulars as a sacrifice somewhere along the trip so I ended up using my size 8's the whole time. I would have used the 6's for the ribbing had I had them.

This bow is also a little different from the common knit-bow you see. I always wondered why they never had the tails, so I made a quick pattern that had all parts of the bow. It could have used blocking, but I don't have any pins at college. I kind of like the curly-ness anyway.

I have a ton of crochet thread floating around from when I was really into crochet covered stone necklaces. I started single crocheting around the usb cord for my ipod. I like how it looks, but I wish the yarn had some variegation like what through the loops did. When I go home I'll grab some sock yarn leftovers to try this with.

I have decided to try to make a more conscious effort to post what I'm doing. I'm always making things, it's just a matter of photographing, posting, and writing about them.

Luckily for me, my wonderful parents bought me a nice little point & shoot camera so it will be easier for me to photograph some works in progress.

This is a wool/angora sweater I bought at salvation army that I'm working on unraveling. Actually, I've already started a new ballet-inspired wrap top design with the yarn on the right!

I knit this hat for my dad on the (8 hour!) train ride here.

Improvised this simple hat to make use of my handspun “unicorn hair yarn”. There is a tiny bit of sheen that you can’t quite get from the photos.

My friend from school bought me some yarn (at wal mart!) to make her a hat, and this is what came from it. (It's lionbrand "tweed stripes", I can't believe how much I like this inexpensive yarn.)

It's my own pattern, slightly slouchy with tight ribbing & a scatterbrained lace pattern.

The ribbing looks extra nice with this color palette.

And warm too. :)

Finished: Watershed

I finished my first serious knit of 2011: Watershed.
This beautiful little sweater was a pretty quick knit.

I considered adding buttons, but decided that I did like how it hangs open. I like the drape of this yarn too. (Same as I used for my Ballet Sweater)

(plus, it's machine washable.)

I'll wear this with tshirts and tanktops in the summer, but for now I like how the lace looks over long sleeves. (braving the winter for these pictures turned my fingers purple.)

My only modification: 1x1 ribbing around the sleeves, I'm not a fan of rolled edges.

Happy new year! This holiday is always a let down for me, but it does get me thinking about what happened during the year and what I should try for next year. I think I pretty much accomplished my blogged goals from last year (except crocheting 100 flowers, haha I don't know how I thought I'd have time for that) so for this year:
1.Make something I really love using wire crochet. (I absolutely love the things Edera does)
2. Become more comfortable with selling handmade. I feel so guilty asking for money, even when I know I've deserved it.
3. Cut down on my yarn stash. I have such beautiful yarn saved, I really dont need to buy any. I'd love to make beautiful things with the yarn I already have.
4. Keep an active sketchbook. (a friend of mine gave me a really nice purse-sized moleskine notebook that I've been trying to keep up with some drawings in)
5. Two hundred followers by next year? My goal for last year was one hundred, and I'm at 140 today! :)

I just finished my first semester of college. I had been enrolled in a program for a BFA, but I switched in the middle of the semester to Liberal arts-undeclared. Today though, I declared a minor in art after weeks & weeks of stressing over losing art in my education. It is such a relief to have both my academics and my art.

I have been working non-stop on big final projects for class (photos to come, maybe. It depends on how they turn out) and I've just been itching to make something small and quick.
I would really like to get more proficient with crocheting with wire. Here's just a start.

Short & Sweet Earflap Hat Pattern

Supplies:
Size 10 (U.S.) 16" circular needles and dpns
Stitch Marker
Skein of "Angel Hair" yarn.
Crochet hook (optional)

Gauge:
3.5 stitches per inch

Earflaps:
CO 5 sts onto one dpn.

Row 1: *kfb, k until last stitch, kfb*
Row 2: knit all stitches

Repeat these two rows until there are 13 stitches on the needle. Continue in garter stitch (knitting all stitches) until piece measures 3.25"
Cut yarn leaving 6" tail.
Repeat for second earflap.

Hat:
Slip stitches from one earflap onto circular needles. Attach yarn and cast on 19 stitches (loosely!) using the knitted cast on. Knit on second earflap. CO 14 sts and place marker for the beginning of the round. Join in the round (being careful not to twist) And work garter stitch border (k1 row, p1 row) for two inches. (Or to taste)

Work stockinette stitch (knit every row) for four more inches.
Decreases:

Round 1:*K7, K2tog* around.
Round 2:*K6, K2tog* around.
Round 3: *K5, k2tog* around.
Round 4: *K4, k2tog* around.
Round 5: *K3, k2tog* around.
Round 6: *K2, K2tog* around.
Round 7: *K1, K2tog* around.
Round 8: *K2tog* around.

Cut yarn leaving a six inch tail, thread through remaining stitches. Weave in ends.

(optional: single crochet border around edge of hat in contrasting color.)
(Braids: Cut 6 pieces of 24" long yarn. thread through the end of the earflap until folded in half. Divide into three sections and braid until 2" of unbraided yarn remain. Tie knot and trim edges. Repeat on other side.)

Commissioned hat: but also, I finally have the perfect recipe for an earflap hat. This one fits great and is warm & soft. (knit out of "angel hair" yarn from Joann Fabrics, it has some wool content but it is mostly acrylic and so so soft.)

I picked up this plain zipper pouch at h&m for somewhere around two dollars. It just happens to perfectly fit an ipod touch.

Silk & Wool Headband

I had some scraps of both colors from the last hat I made, and I've been seeing knitted knotted headbands all over the internet on fashion blogs. This was just five stitches casted onto a hair elastic and knit in hurdle stitch until it was long enough to fit around my head, plus tied into a knot. (the knot is stitched with scrap yarn.)

Hat for the fall! I used size six U.S. needles. The light blue is Grace Lace Silk/Wool mix and the tan is Patons Silk/Bamboo. No pattern, this was just a made-up-as-I-went project.

Got my cord! I have a few photos to share from before I left, here's one. This is a simple wire wrap wring with pearls. It fits me perfectly because I wrapped it right around my finger to make it. The wire is soft, so it's comfortable but sometimes I have to bend it back into shape.

Flower Hairclip

I had a beautiful necklace from Forever 21 with pearls and 5 gold flowers, but after one wear it snapped in the middle. I sewed a satin ruffle to create petals and sewed on of the flowers on top and attached it to a hairclip.

This is a gift for my mom, oil on canvas. I'm not sure of the exact dimensions, but it's pretty big. The paint is on super thick, so the drying time could be weeks.
